general magazine research
From the reasearch i have done into different types of magazines, i can see that popular magazines which are aimed at both male and female audiences tend to feature women with bodies that are not achievable by the average female but feature stories which will appeal to male audience.
- The Canadian Health Network found that the average female model is not only much taller than the average woman, but weighs nearly 25% less.
- The Media Awareness Network, a Canadian research and advocacy organization, found that women’s magazines are ten times more likely to contain articles and advertisements related to dieting than are men’s magazines, and that three-fourths of women’s magazine covers feature articles about overhauling one’s physical appearance.
specifically looking at the above magazines, the three women have been extremely sexualised, we see vuluptious lips, piercing eyes, their all in the middle of the page, the focus of attention and although they look powerful they have been put there for the entertainment of men which makes them vulnerable. Whereas if we compare this to the images of the men, we see them looking very powerful, in a almost aggresive way. They're all dressed very skimpy see-through clothing. similarly the men are are the center of the page making them the center of attention, however even though its for the entertainment of women, its very different because they look sucessful and powerful which attracts women but does not make them vulnerable. It makes them look superior.
